77+20+19! LeBron and AD Shine but Lakers Still Fall: What’s the Problem?
The Los Angeles Lakers suffered a heartbreaking 132-134 overtime loss to the Atlanta Hawks, a result that raises more questions about the team’s consistency and defensive issues. Coming off a humiliating 41-point loss to the Miami Heat, the Lakers were desperate for redemption. However, despite stellar performances from LeBron James and Anthony Davis, the team fell short yet again.

On the other side, the Hawks continued their hot streak, winning their sixth straight game. Atlanta’s resurgence has seen them climb to fifth in the Eastern Conference, thanks in large part to a balanced roster and a masterful game-winning performance from Trae Young.

The Context: Teams Heading in Opposite Directions
Before the game, the Lakers were reeling. They had lost six of their last eight games, with inconsistent performances from their stars and role players. Anthony Davis, in particular, was coming off his worst game of the season, scoring just 8 points on 3-for-14 shooting against Miami.

The Hawks, meanwhile, had turned their season around. Despite a sluggish start, they had defeated strong teams like the Cavaliers (twice) and the Bucks during their winning streak. Playing at home, Atlanta entered the game with momentum and confidence.
A Battle That Went Down to the Wire
The game was a nail-biter from start to finish. The lead changed 18 times, and neither team was able to pull away. It ultimately took a game-winning three-pointer from Trae Young in the closing seconds of overtime to seal the deal for the Hawks.
For the Lakers, this loss stings. Both LeBron James and Anthony Davis delivered arguably their best combined performance of the season.
- LeBron James: 43 minutes, 39 points, 10 rebounds, 11 assists, 3 blocks, and 2 steals. He shot 14-for-25 from the field, 6-for-11 from three, and added a memorable fourth quarter, where he scored 14 points. However, his potential game-winning three-pointer in overtime fell short.
- Anthony Davis: 42 minutes, 38 points, 10 rebounds, and 8 assists. He shot an efficient 15-for-27 from the field and was perfect from the free-throw line (8-for-8). Despite his brilliance, Davis committed 6 turnovers, including two crucial ones in the final moments of the game.
Supporting Cast Steps Up, But Defense Fails
The Lakers’ supporting cast finally showed signs of life. Austin Reaves chipped in 14 points, Rui Hachimura was highly efficient with 12 points on 6-of-5 shooting, and Gabe Vincent added 12 points and 5 assists. Even Max Christie had a standout defensive moment with a clutch block late in regulation.
Offensively, the Lakers were sharp. They shot 51.5% from the field and 45.7% from three-point range. But their defense, particularly on the final play, proved to be their undoing.
With less than 10 seconds remaining, Gabe Vincent inexplicably left Trae Young wide open on the perimeter, choosing to help on Clint Capela instead. Young buried the decisive three, and the Lakers were left to rue a costly defensive miscommunication.
Trae Young’s Redemption
While the Lakers’ stars shined, Trae Young stole the show in overtime. The Hawks’ point guard finished with 31 points, 4 rebounds, and 20 assists, orchestrating Atlanta’s offense masterfully.
Young struggled with his shot for much of regulation, going just 6-for-20 through the first four quarters. However, he came alive in overtime, scoring 7 points and dishing out 3 assists, including his clutch three-pointer.
For the season, Young is averaging 21.2 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 12.3 assists per game. While his efficiency has dipped (38.2% FG, 31.1% 3PT), his playmaking remains elite, generating an additional 29.2 points per game through assists.
The Hawks’ Depth Shines
Atlanta’s depth has been a key factor in their recent surge. Alongside Young, players like Jalen Johnson, Clint Capela, and rookies such as this year’s top pick, Risa She, have made significant contributions. The Hawks’ roster boasts a mix of youth and experience, making them a dangerous team in the East.
While Boston, Cleveland, and Milwaukee remain the favorites in the conference, Atlanta’s strong supporting cast and Young’s leadership give them the potential to play spoiler. After all, this is a team that reached the Eastern Conference Finals in 2021.
The Lakers’ Struggles Continue
For the Lakers, this loss is a significant setback. The team has now lost seven of their last nine games, dropping to a 12-11 record and sliding to 10th in the Western Conference. They are precariously close to the play-in zone, holding just a 1.5-game lead over the 12th-place Sacramento Kings.
Despite their struggles, there are reasons for optimism. LeBron and Davis appear to be rounding into form, and the supporting cast showed signs of improvement. However, the Lakers must tighten their defense and address their late-game execution if they hope to climb the standings.
The next game against the Portland Trail Blazers is a must-win for Los Angeles. After three straight losses, the Lakers can’t afford to let their season spiral further out of control.
