Confirmed: Out for the Season, Warriors Lose Defensive Anchor to Injury
The Golden State Warriors have officially announced that De'Anthony Melton underwent successful surgery to repair a partial tear in his left ACL. The team expects him to fully recover by the start of the 2025-26 NBA season, but this confirmation also marks the end of Melton’s current campaign. His absence leaves a significant void in the Warriors’ lineup, compounding the challenges facing the team.

Melton’s Role and Impact
Melton, in the final year of his contract worth $12.82 million, was a crucial component of Golden State’s backcourt. He played in six games this season, starting in two, and averaged 10.3 points, 3.3 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 1.2 steals in 20.2 minutes per game. Perhaps most impressively, he posted a defensive efficiency rating of 97.4, ranking third across the league.

Before Melton’s injury, the Warriors boasted a strong 9-2 record. However, since his absence, the team has gone just 3-6, sliding to a 12-8 record, which currently places them seventh in the Western Conference—outside the playoff zone. Melton’s elite defensive presence was pivotal in stabilizing Golden State’s lineup, and his absence has been felt on both ends of the court.

Trade Rumors: Warriors Eyeing Cam Johnson
In the wake of Melton’s injury, the Warriors are reportedly exploring trade options to bolster their roster. According to sources, Golden State is interested in acquiring Cam Johnson from the Brooklyn Nets. Johnson is having a stellar season, averaging 18.1 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 3 assists while shooting 49% from the field, 42.2% from three, and 90.8% from the free-throw line—flirting with the prestigious 180 Club.
However, acquiring Johnson won’t come cheap. Brooklyn has set a steep asking price, reportedly seeking multiple first-round picks or a promising young talent paired with draft assets. The Warriors are said to be offering a package that includes Melton’s expiring contract, additional expiring deals, and a future first-round pick, but this proposal may not be sufficient to meet Brooklyn’s demands.
A Struggling Curry and the Warriors’ Offensive Woes
While Melton’s injury has weakened the Warriors defensively, the team’s struggles extend beyond his absence. At the heart of the problem is Stephen Curry, who, at 36 years old, has not been the unstoppable offensive force fans are accustomed to seeing.
Curry is averaging 22.6 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 6.6 assists per game this season, with only two games scoring 30+ points. This marks a significant decline from his usual standards, and his dip in production has left the Warriors without a reliable offensive leader during key moments.
Adding to the team’s woes is the underwhelming performance of Buddy Hield, the team’s marquee offseason acquisition and intended replacement for Klay Thompson. Over the past month, Hield has failed to score 20 points in a single game and has posted single-digit scoring in several outings. With Curry and Hield both struggling, Golden State’s offense has lacked the firepower necessary to contend against top-tier competition.
Can Cam Johnson Save the Season?
If the Warriors manage to acquire Johnson, his arrival could provide a much-needed boost to their roster. A versatile wing with elite shooting and solid defensive capabilities, Johnson would slot seamlessly into Golden State’s system. His presence could help the Warriors regain their footing in the Western Conference and push for a stronger playoff position.
However, integrating Johnson into the lineup presents a new challenge for head coach Steve Kerr. With Andrew Wiggins and Jonathan Kuminga already vying for minutes at the forward positions, adding another high-caliber wing could create a logjam in the rotation. Managing playing time and maintaining chemistry will require careful planning and adjustments from the coaching staff.
Alternatively, if the Warriors opt to include Kuminga or Wiggins in a trade package for Johnson, they would alleviate the rotation issue but risk weakening their depth. Either way, a potential deal for Johnson comes with both rewards and challenges.
The Road Ahead
Golden State’s struggles aren’t just about Melton’s injury or trade scenarios. The team’s current predicament is a culmination of declining performances from key players, limited offensive output, and defensive vulnerabilities. With the Western Conference more competitive than ever, the Warriors must act decisively to avoid falling further behind.
Whether through a trade for Johnson or other roster moves, the Warriors need a spark to reignite their season. For now, all eyes are on the front office as fans wait to see how the team addresses the challenges ahead.
