Nuggets Eyeing Zach LaVine: A Blockbuster NBA Trade in the Works?
The NBA trade rumor mill has been buzzing, and this time, it’s the Denver Nuggets potentially making a seismic move. While this isn’t about Zion Williamson joining the Warriors or Jimmy Butler taking his talents to the Suns, it’s a name that could still shake up the league—Zach LaVine.

Recent reports from prominent insiders suggest the Nuggets are seriously exploring the idea of acquiring LaVine to bolster their roster. Sam Amick has revealed that Denver is in search of a dynamic scoring option to complement Nikola Jokic. LaVine, with his offensive firepower, has emerged as their primary target.

The Proposed Trade Framework
NBA insider Duane Sidery has outlined a plausible trade structure: Michael Porter Jr. ($35.86 million) and Zeke Nnaji ($8.89 million) would be sufficient to match LaVine’s $43.03 million salary. However, not everyone is sold on the deal. Analysts at Bleacher Report are skeptical, arguing that bringing in LaVine may not provide the Nuggets with a transformative boost. Porter, they contend, offers advantages that LaVine doesn’t—youth, height, and established chemistry with Denver’s core players.

On the other hand, The Athletic suggests that LaVine’s arrival in Denver could elevate their shooting capabilities and alleviate some of the playmaking burden on Jokic and Jamal Murray. While the Nuggets would inevitably sacrifice rebounding prowess, the potential offensive benefits may outweigh the downside.
Nuggets’ Current Struggles
The Nuggets, currently 14-10 and sitting fifth in the Western Conference, have shown areas in need of improvement. Despite ranking ninth in the league with 45 rebounds per game, their shooting efficiency remains a concern. Denver ranks 26th in the NBA with just 11.5 three-pointers made per game. Adding LaVine could address their lack of consistent outside shooting, a glaring issue for a team hoping to repeat as champions.
Zach LaVine: High Cost, High Reward?
LaVine’s career has been marred by constant trade speculation, and his market value has reportedly dipped in recent years. A significant hurdle is his lucrative contract, which totals approximately $140 million over the next three years. Despite the financial concerns, LaVine’s on-court production speaks for itself.
This season, LaVine is averaging 21.7 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 4.2 assists while shooting an impressive 50.1% from the field. His three-point shooting—42.9% on 3.2 makes per game—stands out, particularly given his modest usage rate of 25% (57th in the league). Crucially, LaVine doesn’t dominate the ball, making him a seamless fit alongside Denver’s existing stars.
Imagining a starting five of Jamal Murray, Zach LaVine, Christian Braun, Aaron Gordon, and Nikola Jokic, with Russell Westbrook leading the second unit, paints a promising picture for Denver’s championship aspirations.
Nuggets’ Interest in Brandon Ingram
While LaVine remains a focal point of trade discussions, Denver is reportedly also monitoring Brandon Ingram of the New Orleans Pelicans. Ingram, who earns $36.02 million this season, could be swapped for Michael Porter Jr. in a straightforward deal.
However, the potential acquisition of Ingram has garnered far less enthusiasm. Critics argue that Ingram’s ball-dominant style, coupled with average shooting and defense, makes him a less optimal fit for Denver. Additionally, Ingram’s contract status complicates matters. He is in a contract year and is rumored to be seeking a max extension worth over $200 million next summer.
Ingram’s Numbers Don’t Impress
This season, Ingram is averaging 22.2 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 5.2 assists with 3.8 turnovers per game. He’s shooting 46.5% from the field and 37.4% from deep, making 2.4 threes per game. His usage rate of 30.5% ranks 13th in the NBA, reflecting his heavy involvement in the Pelicans’ offense.
However, Ingram’s production has done little to lift New Orleans, as the team currently sits at the bottom of the Western Conference with a dismal 5-22 record. Given these factors, his chances of securing a massive payday seem slim, which could deter the Nuggets from pursuing him.
The Path Forward
For the Nuggets, the decision to pursue LaVine or Ingram comes down to fit, cost, and the potential to maximize Jokic’s prime years. While LaVine appears to be the more seamless addition, his hefty contract could deter Denver’s front office. As the trade deadline approaches, all eyes will be on the Nuggets to see if they make the bold move that could reshape their season—and possibly the league.
